Geography: Iran is a Middle Eastern Islamic republic and
theocracy bordering Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan,
Turkmenistan and Turkey and with shorelines to the Caspian Sea, the
Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.
Greater Iran or the Iranian Cultural Continent refers to the
regions of South, West, and Central Asia that have significant
Iranian cultural influence and have historically been ruled by
Iranian peoples. It roughly corresponds to the territory on the
Iranian plateau and its bordering plains, stretching from Iraq, the
Caucasus, and Turkey in the west, to the Indus River of Pakistan in
the east.
Because the Achaemenid Empire or "First Persian Empire" was the
successor state to the empires of Assyria and Babylonia based in
Iraq, and because Elam is part of Iran, the Iranians also share in
the heritage of ancient Mesopotamia together with the Iraqis.

U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1386, Satellite Image
Atlas of Glaciers of the World, contains 11 chapters designated by
the letters A through K. Chapter A provides a comprehensive, yet
concise, review of the "State of the Earth's Cryosphere at the
Beginning of the 21st Century: Glaciers, Global Snow Cover,
Floating Ice, and Permafrost and Periglacial Environments," and a
"Map/Poster of the Earth's Dynamic Cryosphere," and a set of eight
"Supplemental Cryosphere Notes" about the Earth's Dynamic
Cryosphere and the Earth System. The next 10 chapters, B through K,
are arranged geographically and present glaciological information
from Landsat and other sources of historic and modern data on each
of the geographic areas. Chapter B covers Antarctica; Chapter C,
Greenland; Chapter D, Iceland; Chapter E, Continental Europe
(except for the European part of the former Soviet Union),
including the Alps, the Pyrenees, Norway, Sweden, Svalbard
(Norway), and Jan Mayen (Norway); Chapter F, Asia, including the
European part of the former Soviet Union, China, Afghanistan,
Pakistan, India, Nepal, and Bhutan; Chapter G, Turkey, Iran, and
Africa; Chapter H, Irian Jaya (Indonesia) and New Zealand; Chapter
I, South America; Chapter J, North America (excluding Alaska); and
Chapter K, Alaska. Chapters A–D each include map plates.

A Collection of selected maps of Iran in the Qajar Era (1193 - 1344 Lunar Calendar / 1779-1926 Gregorian
Calendar)
Documentary heritage submitted by the Islamic Republic of Iran and recommended for inclusion in the
Memory of the World Register in 2013.
The collection of maps is a compilation of handwritten and lithographic maps which show the geographical
plateau of Iran as a major part of the historical Silk Road as well as the interface of the North-South
corridor. The collection is a significant research document, providing an authentic source for studying the
demographic, natural, historical and cultural geography of different West-Asian regions. The maps provide
information on boundary lines, impacts of human-instigated and natural disasters on the borders, and
geographical place names some of which are now either non-existent or have been renamed.
