Geography: Eritrea is a tropical Northeast African republic in
the Sahel region bordering Djibouti, Ethiopia and Sudan and with
coastline to the Red Sea.

1993, Eritrea became independent and was admitted as a member of
the United Nations. On 29 April 1993, Ethiopia recognised Eritrea's
sovereignty and independence and on 30 July 1993, the two
Governments concluded an Agreement of Friendship and
Co-operation.
In May 1998, hostilities broke out between Eritrea and
Ethiopia.
After a number of attempts to re-establish peace between the two
Parties, the December Agreement was signed on 12 December 2000,
providing for the permanent termination of military hostilities
between them. A major component of this Agreement was Article 4,
the terms of which have been set out above, providing for the
establishment of the present Commission.'
