Amerikansk folkemusik,
spillemandsmusik og -viser.

American folk music, fiddle music and ballads.
American folk music consists of a musical patchwork from around the world. All the emigrants folk music have been cobbled together to local American editions, as well as composed and written folk music by all the inhabitants of the country, regardless of their ethnic origin. The enormous musical heritage the Seeger family left after more than 100 years of teaching, communication and political work, is a good example. The European immigrants brought their home country's culture as did the slaves. The American Indians and Inuits own music are chapters for themselves.
The Newport Folk Festival is an American annual folk-oriented music festival in Newport, Rhode Island, which began in 1959 as a counterpart to the previously established Newport Jazz Festival. The festival features performances by folk, blues, country, bluegrass and folk rock musicians, and since the 1990s has featured performers from related contemporary genres, such as alternative country, indie folk and folk punk. There was no festival in 1961 and 1962, and the festival folded from 1970 until 1985 when it was revived. The original festival board included musicians Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand, Pete Seeger and Albert Grossman.

Famed Folk Singer and Composer Theodore Bikel Dies at 91 Democracy Now: Headlines July 22, 2015
- http://www.democracynow.org/2015/7/22/headlines
'The renowned actor, musician, composer and activist Theodore Bikel has died at the age of 91. Bikel was known for creating the role of Baron von Trapp in "The Sound of Music" on Broadway and for the role of Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof," which he played more than 2,000 times. He was a folk singer who co-founded the Newport Folk Festival with Pete Seeger. And he was an outspoken critic of Israeli policy, including plans to forcibly relocate 40,000 Bedouin Arabs from their ancestral lands, which he denounced on Democracy Now!
Theodore Bikel: "One thing that is absolutely clear in my mind is that human beings cannot be treated like cattle. Human beings must be given the dignity and the respect that all human beings deserve, especially by a people who themselves—Jews—have experienced such deprivation in the past. So when I say that the very people who were told to get out of Anatevka in the fictional village of 'Fiddler on the Roof,' the descendants of those very people are now telling others, strangers in their midst, that they must get out of their homes, seems fundamentally wrong. And a wrong cannot be allowed to stand."'
