USA anvendte Shinkolobwe minens uran ressourcer til at forsyne
Manhattan projektet med råmaterialer til at konstruere
atombomben under Anden Verdenskrig. Edgar Sengier, daværende
direktør for Union Minière du Haut Katanga havde
oplagret 1.200 tons uranmalm i et pakhus på Staten Island,
New York. Dette malm og en ekstra 3.000 tons malm som opbevares
over jorden ved minen blev købt af oberst Ken Nichols til
brug i projektet. Minen var blevet lukket i 1939 og var
oversvømmet. Den amerikanske hær har sendt et hold fra
sit Corps of Engineers til at genoprette minen, udvide flyvepladser
i Leopoldville og Lubumbashi (formelt Elizabethville), og bygge en
havn i Matadi på Congo-floden. Mellem 1942 og 1944 blev
omkring 30.000 tons uranmalm solgt til den amerikanske
hær.

atomic weapons and power plants throughout the world. Uranium for
the Hiroshima bomb, for example, came from the Belgian Congo.
During any given year of the Cold War, between 20 percent and 50
percent of the Western world’s uranium came from African
places: Congo, Niger, South Africa, Gabon, Madagascar, and
Namibia.'
