Marshalløerne var koloniseret af Tyskland 1884-1914. I 1922 blev Marshalløerne, efter en aftale mellem Japan historie og USA en del af det japanske mandatområde under Folkeforbundet, hvilket landet var til og med anden verdenskrig. De japansk bemyndigede øer eller det sydlige Stillehav mandatet bestod af dele af Palau, Nordmarianerne, Mikronesiens forenede stater, og Marshalløerne.
