Fra tidspunktet for sin kolonisering af europæiske magter, indtil opnåelse af selvstyre i 1975, blev den moderne nation Papua Ny Guinea administreret af en række regeringer, militæret, og endda en privat kommerciel organisation.
For en stor del af denne periode var der en australsk interesse i forvaltningen af i det mindste en del af landet, og det er derfor ikke overraskende, at i krisetider, hvor der var behov for at evakuere arkiver, var det til Australien, at de blev sendt til sikker opbevaring. Ved udgangen af Anden Verdenskrig, var Australien hjemsted for en betydelig samling af Papua Ny Guinea arkiver. Disse ankom i to forsendelser: Arkiver evakueret fra Rabaul efter et vulkanudbrud i 1937, og arkiver evakueret efter den japanske invasion i 1942.
/ From the time of its colonisation by European powers until the achievement of self-government in 1975, the modern nation of Papua New Guinea was administered by a number of governments, the military, and even a private commercial organisation.
For much of this period there was an Australian interest in the administration of at least part of the country, and it is therefore not surprising that in times of crisis when there was a need to evacuate records, it was to Australia that they were sent for safe keeping. By the end of World War II, Australia was the home of a considerable collection of Papua New Guinea records. These arrived in two main shipments: records evacuated from Rabaul following a volcanic eruption in 1937, and records evacuated following the Japanese invasion in 1942.
