- In February 1999 Security Council resolution 1227 strongly
urged 'all States to end immediately all sales of arms and
munitions to Ethiopia and Eritrea' due to the border conflict
between the two states. In May 2000 the Security Council replaced
this non-binding statement with a mandatory arms embargo.
In March 1999, in reaction to the war between Ethiopia and Eritrea,
the Council of the European Union adopted Common Position
1999/206/CFSP imposing an arms embargo on Ethiopia and Eritrea. The
embargo expired on 31 May 2001 as acknowledged in Common Position
2001/215/CFSP
