Arms Factories, California
By Kurt Singer
These are official figures: 50.000 people work in Southern's California's armament industry during the month of October 2002. According to the Pentagon these are only 25% of all weapon contracts issued by the Departmen of Defense. These products would probably play a role in a war against Iraq.
Here are the important producers for a super power's military might:
LOCKHEED MARTIN: Works out of Palmdale on classified design in advanced aircraft at its famed Skunk Plant facility. Their engineers upgraded equipment for F-117 stealth fighters and U-2 spy planes.
RAYTHEON: Creates in El Segundo sensors for spy planes, radar jamming equipent and missile guidance systems. The Pentagn also ordered an increase in the production of "Little Buddys" which is designed as a decoy to electronically fool an aircraft missile to hit it instead of the airplane. It's produced at the Goleta plant outside of Santa Barbara. Raytheon is also upgrading the Tomahawk missile.
AEROSPACE CORP: Government sponsored research center that assists and supervises major government defense programs.
TRW: Produces battlefield command and control systems in Rodondo Beach and Carson. Received a giant order to install an international battlefield computer system. The firm also builds military communication satellites.
BOEING: Branch located in Long Beach received an order for 60 large transport aircrafts to transport heavy military equiment and troop transports. Their branches in Seal Beach and Anaheim design and develop a new generation of spy satellites and communication systems. The Pentagon also asked to double the production of kits that turn so called dumb bombs into much more accurate guided bombs.
NORTHROP GRUMAN CORPORATION: Their El Segundo plant which developed the B-2 Steallh bomber is designing the latest in manned aircraft and airborne surveillance equipment.
While the American stockmarket lost over 95 billion dollars Raytheon's stock advanced 30% and TRW shares maximized with 75%. But most engineers working in California's weapon industry had to postpone their vacations.
America's armed forces are now located all over the world and the super power has more troops stationed over seas than the British Empire had sent into a territory where the sun never sank.
