Amerikansk forfatter, pacifist og fortaler for civil ulydighed. Induvidialistisk anarkist.
Fængslet 1847 for militærskattenægtelse. Henry David Thoreau holdt en Concord Lyceum forlæsning om Resistance to Civil Government i januar 1848. Den publiceres i maj 1849 i Elizabeth P. Peabodys tidsskrift, Æsthetic Papers, som et senere meget kendt værk "Civil ulydighed" .

The first three chapters of A Yankee in Canada appeared in Putnam's magazine in 1853 under the title "Excursion to Canada."
"Prayers" was attributed to Thoreau by mistake, only a prayer in verse included being his (on p. 120, with first line "Great God, I ask thee for no meaner pelf"). The essay itself, first published in the Dial, is by Emerson, and is now published in his Natural history of the intellect
