Barokken / Baroque Portugesisk. Barokken er en hovedsagelig europæisk kulturperiode, som begyndte først i det 17. århundrede i Rom omring år 1600 og varer frem til omkring 1725, kendetegnet ved kunst, litteratur, dans og musik. Fra Italien bredte barokken sig til resten af Europa og Nordamerika. Mange musikalske former blev udviklet i denne æra, så som koncerten og sinfonia. Former, såsom sonaten, kantaten og oratorium blomstrede. Også, opera født ud af eksperimentering med den florentinske Camerata, skaberne af Monodi, der forsøgte at genskabe de gamle grækeres teatralske kunst. En vigtig teknik i barok musik var brugen af ostinato, en gentagen bas linje. Didos klagesang af Henry Purcell er et berømt eksempel på denne teknik.
