Since World War II, 5 Wing Goose Bay has had a continuous international presence, which has resulted in significant socio-economic benefits and stability for the surrounding communities. As the site of tactical flying training in Canada, 5 Wing Goose Bay is home to detachments from Britain’s Royal Air Force, the German Luftwaffe and the Italian Aeronotic militaire. The Wing also serves as a NORAD CF-18 deployed operating base and airfield, supporting a mix of aviation activities, military and civilian in north eastern-Canada.
The majority of environmental contamination at 5 Wing can be attributed to past storage and handling practices of a broad range of environmental contaminants including hydrocarbons, heavy metals, chlorinated compounds (i.e. PCBs), pesticides (including DDT), etc. The history of contamination at 5 Wing Goose Bay is well known and has a high profile with the public, media and regulatory agencies. DND is the lead department on military, environmental and economic issues in Goose Bay because of its on-site presence at 5 Wing and long history in the local community. Independent of the operational future of 5 Wing Goose Bay, the Department is committed to cleaning up the contamination that exist at 5 Wing Goose Bay...
