De tre kongeriger: Goguryeo, Baekje og Silla dominerede den koreanske halvø og dele af Manchuriet det meste af det 1. år-tusinde fra år 57 til 668, som markerede begyndelsen på de nordlige og sydlige stater i Det forenede Silla i syd og Balhae i Nord.
Af andre ophørte koreanske stater kan nævnes: Gaya Forbundet, Dongye, Okjeo, Buyeo og Usan.
Korea var besat af Japan, 1910-1945. Efter anden verdenskrig blev Korea besat af Sovjetunionen og USA, i den tidlige del af den kolde krig, hvilket resulterede i en deling af landet i hhv Nord- og Sydkorea.
