8,000 desert during Iraq war

WASHINGTON At least 8,000 members of the all-volunteer U.S.
military have deserted since the Iraq war began, Pentagon records
show, although the overall desertion rate has plunged since the
Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.
Since fall 2003, 4,387 Army soldiers, 3,454 Navy sailors and 82 Air
Force personnel have deserted. The Marine Corps does not track the
number of desertions each year but listed 1,455 Marines in
desertion status last September, the end of fiscal 2005, says Capt.
Jay Delarosa, a Marine Corps spokesman.
Desertion records are kept by fiscal year, so there are no figures
from the beginning of the war in March 2003 until that fall...

CONTRACTS from the United States Department of Defense
AshBritt Inc., Pompano Beach, Fla., was awarded on March 10, 2006,
a delivery order amount of $500,000,000 as part of a $1,000,000,000
firm-fixed-price contract for debris removal site management and
debris reduction in Mississippi. Performance locations will be
determined with each delivery order, and is expected to be
completed by Sept. 30, 2006. Contract funds will not expire at the
end of the current fiscal year. There were 35 bids solicited on
March 10, 2006, and 22 bids were received. The U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, Vicksburg, Miss., is the contracting activity
(W912P8-05-D-0025).
Lockheed Martin Corp., Grand Prairie, Texas, was awarded on March
16, 2006, a $250,127,976 modification to a firm-fixed-price
contract for production of FY05 PATRIOT PAC-3 missiles. Work will
be performed in Grand Prairie, Texas (87 percent), Chelmsford,
Mass. (7 percent), Camden, Ark. (4 percent), and Lufkin, Texas (2
percent), and is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, 2010.
Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal
year. This was a sole source contract initiated on May 27, 2004.
The U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Ala.,
is the contracting activity (W31P4Q-05-C-0051).
Northrop Grumman Systems Corp., Rolling Meadows, Ill., is being
awarded a $275,000,000 indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity,
firm fixed price contract. This action provides for litening
targeting pods, upgrades support equipment, training, related
logistics support, and pod integration support for several
aircrafts in support of the Air Force, Air National Guard, Air
Force Reserve Command, and Marine Corps. This effort supports the
following aircrafts: F-16, F-15, A-10 and B-52. The Air Force can
issue delivery orders totaling up to the maximum amount indicated
above, although actual requirements may be less than the amount
indicated above. At this time, no funds have been obligated. No
completion date at this time. The Headquarters Aeronautical Systems
Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, is the contracting
activity (FA8607-04-D-2751).
