Magistrates deny freedom to protest and worship
CAMPAIGN FOR THE ACCOUNTABILITY OF AMERICAN BASES (CAAB)
Human rights and the freedom to protest and worship were taken away
today by two Magistrates in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.
Lindis Percy (Joint Co-ordinator of the Campaign for the
Accountability of American Bases - CAAB) was in Harrogate
Magistrates' Court to make an application to vary the bail
conditions which were imposed on 7 January 2006. She was arrested
by Paul Skinner (Ministry of Defence Police Agency officer) for
allegedly obstructing the highway at the American base at NSA
Menwith Hill. This incident happened during the weekly Tuesday
evening CAAB demonstration on 7 January 2006.
The bail conditions meant that Ms Percy would be put in a dangerous
position by the police if she was to join the demonstration - so
putting her and others physical security at risk. Her application
today was to vary the conditions and to build in a exception so
that she could attend the Quaker Meeting for Worship which is held
outside Menwith Hill on the first Saturday of every other
month.
Two Magistrates sitting at Harrogate Magistrates' Court (Mrs Thomas
and Mrs McHarj) denied Ms Percy's application and reimposed the
orginal bail conditions:
Ms Percy entered a plea of not guilty to the charge.
Ms Percy said, Today's decision is sinister. The undermining of
civil liberties is very worrying particuarly when religioius belief
and practice is attacked and denied".
Ms Percy will be seeking to challenge the decision by Mrs Thomas
and Mrs McHarj.
NSA Menwith Hill will be key to any conflict in Iran
George W Bush has not ruled out military actionin Iran
Last year an application for an ASBO against Ms Percy was rejected
- as was an 8 week tagging and curfew Order
