Washington, DC -- Wednesday, February 25, 2004 -- A controversial associate of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has resigned from his seat on a key Pentagon advisory panel, ABC News has learned.
Richard Perle, a lightning-rod for critics of the Bush administration's national security policies, informed Rumsfeld more than two weeks ago he was quitting the Defense Policy Board. He confirmed the decision in a letter to the defense chief last Wednesday.

A relatively-unknown Vermont activist has claimed responsibility for the recent resignation of neo-con Richard Perle from the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board (DPB).
John Wilmerding, 55, of Brattleboro, VT, founder of an obscure, below-the-radar internet activist group known as the Coalition for Equity-Restorative Justice (CERJ), says that his groups efforts are responsible for making Perle's continuation on the Board untenable.
"It started last year when we learned that Perle had been conducting secret meetings with international arms merchant Adnan Khashoggi," said Wilmerding. "We then began to publish a series of parodies and satires intended to pressure Perle to step down."
One of the secret meetings held by Perle was brought to light by veteran commentator Seymour Hersh of The New Yorker magazine. Hersh was able to produce records indicating that Perle had met in secret with Khashoggi in Marseilles, France a few months before.
"We were able to prove to the public that Perle was abusing the authority of his office at the Pentagon," Wilmerding continued. "In addition to the secret deals cut with Khashoggi, we uncovered information indicating that Perle was selling his influence with government to various other commercial concerns."
Perle was recently accused in various media outlets of offering his services in procuring government influence for a fee. Wilmerding and CERJ capitalized on this by christening him the "Perle of Cheap Price", a reference to a Biblical quote, and further lampooned Khashoggi with the use of the monicker "Cash-hoggie".
