Spansk. Platin er det 78. grundstof i det periodiske system.
Platinmetaller er en samlet betegnelse for grundstofferne ruthenium, osmium, rhodium, Iridium, palladium og platin.
Platin er et ædelmetal, først og fremmest udvundet i Canada, Rusland, Sydafrika, USA og Zimbabwe, der anvendes til smykker, i sprængstoffer, til præcisionsinstrumenter og i kemiske processer. Sidstnævnte eksempelvis ved fremstilling af polonium og ved genanvendelse af tritium fra tungt vand eller ved fremstilling af tungt vand..
Platin har stor betydning i krigsmaterielindustrien, specielt i atomvåbenproduktion, hvor metallet i USA omtales som et Nuclear Weapons-Related Materiel .
