Del af USA's atomvåbenindustrielle kompleks under
Det amerikanske
energiministerium.
Historie: Laboratoriet blev grundlagt under anden verdenskrig, i 1943, kaldet Procject Y,
som et hemmeligt, centraliseret anlæg til at koordinere den
videnskabelige forskning i i forskellige universiteter under Manhattan projektet, der udviklede de
første amerikanske
atombomber. Blandt de atomfysikere der arbejdede i Los Alemos
kan nævnes: Niels Bohr, Enrico
Fermi, Robert J. Oppenheimer og Edward Teller.
