U.N. Commends New Zealand's Steps Against
Nuclear Proliferation 
A top U.N. arms control official on Tuesday commended New Zealand's
1987 decision to ban nuclear weapons from its territory.
Legislators established their nation as a nuclear weapon-free zone
"in the face of strong international opposition," and the
implementing law "reinforced New Zealand’s stance against the
continued development of weapons of mass destruction and
underscored Parliament’s full support for nuclear
disarmament," U.N. Disarmament Affairs High Representative Angela
Kane told the body in comments prepared to mark the statute's
passage 25 years ago, writes Global Security Newswire.
