Statement concerning israel's blockade of Gaza
by John Avery
Israel's illegal blockade of Gaza is an example of collective punishment, and thus a crime against humanity. The murderous attack in international waters on a convoy of ships bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza is also a gross violation of international law. I think that despite efforts of the United States to protect Israel from the consequences of its crimes, legal action should be taken, both in the United Nations General Assembly and in the International Criminal Court. There are good grounds for suspending the membership of Israel in the United Nations as long as it violates General Assembly resolutions and until it conforms with the principles of international humanitarian law.

Statement on extrajudicial killings by means of drones
by John Avery
The United States argues that extrajudicial CIA killings by means of Drones in countries with which the US is not at war are justified as long as they are part of the “war on terror”. However, if such a principle were accepted, it would undermine all international efforts to safeguard human rights throughout the world. Philip Alston, UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Killings, states that “Intelligence agencies, which by definition are determined to remain unaccountable except to their own paymasters, have no place in running programs that kill people in other countries”. Besides being illegal, the Drone killings are also highly counterproductive, since reports of the large numbers of innocent civilians killed by the Drones create rage in the targeted countries, and hence more terrorists.
