Oak Ridge Begins Destroying Historic Enrichment Facility
Workers on Tuesday began to tear down a large building that once housed uranium enrichment operations at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported (see GSN, Dec. 21, 2005).
The K-25 enrichment facility began operating in 1945 and for a decade was the only site in the country capable of producing the uranium used in U.S. nuclear weapons, according to Oak Ridge historian Bill Wilcox.
Even with the siding already removed as part of a years-long effort to initiate dismantlement, work is expected to require at least two years and hundreds of millions of dollars (Frank Munger, Knoxville News Sentinel, Dec. 17).
