Hiroshima’s mayor will visit Copenhagen
Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima, will visit Copenhagen on
November 16th and 17th. Mayor Akiba is the President of Mayors for
Peace, an international organisation of more than 1700 cities in
122 countries. These cities have resolved to work for peace and for
the complete abolition of nuclear weapons. Explaining why he
believes that cities and their mayors should work for these goals,
Mayor Akiba said: “ ‘Civicide’ is the murder of a
city and potentially civilisation itself; nuclear weapons have been
invented, have been used, and have been proliferated with the
intent of committing civicide.” More evidence that cities and
their citizens are increasingly concerned with these issues comes
from the United States Conference of Mayors, which recently adopted
a resolution calling for negotiation on the complete elimination of
nuclear weapons. The resolution states that “Weapons of mass
destruction have no place in a civilised world.”
The City Council of Copenhagen has decided (by a large majority
vote) to join Mayors for Peace, and Dr. Akiba hopes that other
Danish cities and their mayors will follow suit. Hederslev is
already a member. On November 16th, Mayor Akiba will visit the City
Hall of Copenhagen. He will be welcomed by Copenhagen’s Mayor
for Technology and Environment, Klaus Bondam.
On November 16, Mayor Akiba will also participate in a morning
devoted to peace education at Copenhagen’s Open Gymnasium,
Sjælør Boulevard 133, 2500 Valby. Representatives from
many Danish peace organisations will participate. These
representatives will arrive at the gymnasium at 8.00 AM, and will
organise workshops discussing the philosophy of their organisations
and what they have achieved and hope to achieve. For example, a
representative of the Mandela Centre will discuss Nelson
Mandela’s concept of truth and reconciliation, while a
representative of the Danish United Nations Association will
discuss ways in which the United Nations can be improved. After 45
minutes, the students will move to another workshop. At 10.00,
Mayor Akiba will give a plenary address to all of the students of
the gymnasium, and at 11.00 there will be a panel discussion.
On Saturday, November 17th, 13.00-17.00, Mayor Akiba will give a
keynote speech at a Peace Education Conference at the University of
Copenhagen. The conference will be held at Alexander Hall,
Bispetorvet 3, 1167 Copenhagen K. The lectures will be in English
and admission is free. Other speakers at the conference will
include Professor Peter Kemp, Dr. Mikael Aktor, Dr. Tom
Børsen, Dr. Bill Williams and a representative of
UNESCO.
After leaving Copenhagen, Mayor Akiba will travel to Stockholm,
where he will speak at the Human Rights Day, meet with the Mayor of
Stockholm, and visit the Nobel Foundation. He and his organisation
have been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
