Largest U.S. Cities Aren't Ready for Nuclear Attack, Study

March 21 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. medical system would not be able
to handle the casualties and hospital disruptions that would result
from a nuclear attack, a study found.
The study simulated an attack from a 20-kiloton and a 550- kiloton
nuclear detonation in New York, Washington, Chicago or Atlanta. In
all four cities, hospitals were concentrated in the areas most
likely to be destroyed, and the medical system would be unable to
handle the hundreds of thousands of surviving burn victims,
according to the study in the current issue of the International
Journal of Health Geographics.
