World military spending 2005
World military spending in 2005 for the first time topped US$1 trillion,
according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. It has now
reached an an average of US$173 per capita,
The SIPRI Yearbook 2006 Armaments, Disarmament and International Security - was
published on 12 June. It reports that world military expenditure in 2005 reached
US$1118 billion in current dollars. This is 2.5% of world GDP and represents an
increase of 3.4 % since 2004 and of 34 % in the 10 years since 1996. The USA is
responsible for about 80% of the 2005 increase, and its military expenditure now
accounts for 48% of the world total.
The SIPRI "Top 100" are those companies reckoned to be the largest arms
producers. The value of their combined sales in 2004 rose to US $268 billion, a
15 per cent rise. 63.3% of this is accounted for by 40 US companies, and 39.4%
by 36 West European companies.
The Yearbook draws attention to "the privatization of defence services and
support" which is "drawing new kinds of suppliers into military contracting ...
While some of these activities can be seen as an expansion of the arms industry,
other support activities are not military services but general security services
and construction, creating a periphery of private companies around the core arms
industry".
