U.K. to Invest $1.7 Billion in Trident modernisation
The United Kingdom plans to spend $1.7 billion to ensure the
“continued reliability and safety” of its Trident
nuclear weapons system, the Financial Times reported today.
British Defense Secretary John Reid said the money was needed over
the next three years to “maintain the existing Trident
warhead stockpile.”
The spending decision is likely to displease the Labor Party, which
is pushing for the United Kingdom to give up the submarine-launched
ICBM, the Times reported. Prime Minister Tony Blair has not made a
decision on whether to replace the missiles, writes Jean Eaglesham,
Financial Times.
