For weeks, United For Peace and Justice (UFPJ), a national
coalition of several hundred organizations, has been negotiating in
good faith with the New York City Police Department in preparation
for U.S. participation in the unprecedented global peace
demonstration on February 15th - "The World Says No To War." On
that day millions of people in more than 300 cities around the
world will oppose a U.S. war against Iraq on that day. Hundreds of
busloads of demonstrators will be coming to New York from points
around the country to join with New Yorkers from all of the city's
diverse communities in a rebuke to the Bush administration's
threatened bombing and invasion of Iraq.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the police department have been
blocking our efforts to organize a peaceful and nonviolent protest.
It took a series of meeting before they finally agreed to give us a
permit to assemble at 49th Street and First Avenue, near the United
Nations. They are still refusing to grant a permit to march.
UFPJ's lawyers, the New York Civil Liberties Union, has filed suit
against the Mayor and the police to obtain the necessary permits
for a march. A federal judge will rule on the matter on Monday,
Feb. 10.
