Amerikanske våbenfabrikker mod fagforeninger
In a damning indictment of previous management at the Avondale shipyard in New Orleans, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ordered the shipbuilder to rehire 22 workers fired illegally during a bitter seven-year battle for union representation at the yard. Judge Phillip McLeod ordered Avondale to repay 5.4 million dollars in legal fees charged to the US Navy during the anti-union drive, to make good lost wages to numerous other employees illegally suspended or disciplined, and to pay medical expenses to a worker hurt performing a job to which he was illegally transferred. The eight-year-long case is one of the last remaining legacies of a bitter war over the right to union representation at Avondale that became a lightning rod for union-management struggles nationwide. The peace was finally made in late 1999, when Litton Industries took over the yard and agreed to remain neutral on the issue. The Metal Trades Department was duly reaffirmed as the workers' bargaining agent. Litton was subsequently taken over in its turn by US defense giant Northrop Grumman. A Metal Trades Department attorney meanwhile, termed it a clear vindication of the workers' charges of massive harassment and illegal treatment, skriver THE WEEKLY UNION NEWSPAPER OF THE SEA MARINE ELECTRONICS DIVISION - ILA, AFL-CIO.
