Two U.S. Navy F-14 fighters from the carrier John F. Kennedy shot down two Libyan MiG-23 aircraft some 70 miles north of the Libyan coast after the Libyan aircraft displayed what the Department of Defense described as "hostile intent" on January 4, 1989. Libya claimed its two aircraft were on routine patrol and were attacked by the United States.
