Nuclear fallout Cancer victims win suit in Utah but community worries about its image

The Denver Post ST GEORGE Utah Pickett has watched his family die here There have been 12 cancer deaths in al.l First was his mother-in-law then a grandmother a niece and a sister. Two weeks before Christmas in his wife Viola died. Pickett remembers how the dying just started like wildfire in the early part of 1951. That's when the federal government began testing atomic bombs 100 miles southwest of St George in the Nevada desert. For the next decade thick radioactive clouds swept over an area stretching from the Grand Canyon almost to Salt Lake City. This month Pickett 63 and hundreds of others got official confirmation of something they had suspected for nearly 33 years that government had brought death to the Utah desert. Our own people done this to said Pickett whose grandfather settled in the valley in the It's just incredible that this could happen in the United States of America...
