The first group from Peace Brigades International (PBI) arrived in
Guatemala to provide unarmed and nonviolent witness &
protection for indigenous leaders. Following decades of severe
repression of native ethnic groups by the unelected military
government, the PBI team accompanied the Mutual Support Group (GAM
in Spanish) of Families of the Disappeared, the first human rights
group to emerge from the terror and survive.
