Civil disobedience; United Kingdom
The Oxford Committee of 100 starts two-day blockade of the Greenham Common air base. More than 300 demonstrators are arrested.
'Britain had settled into its role as America's unsinkable aircraft carrier. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament was active in the 1950's and 1960s. There was a sit down blockade by the Committee of 100 at Greenham Common in 1962. The Committee of 100 was a group of famous people, writers, academics, actors, film stars and philosophers including Bertrand Russell. They were removed by the police and carefully lifted into hired furniture removal vans and taken away to be arrested'.

'Committee of 100 Demonstration, Greenham Common
HC Deb 03 July 1962 vol 662 c36W 36W Mrs. Butler asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department by what authority the police obtained the fingerprints and photographs of arrested persons following the Committee of 100 demonstration at Greenham Common on Saturday, 23rd June.
Mr. R. A. Butler This is a matter which falls within the responsibility of the Chief Constable of Berkshire, to whose notice I have brought the hon. Member's Question'.
United States Air Force Base, Greenham Common (Demonstration)
HC Deb 06 June 1962 vol 661 c449 449
19. Mr. Marten asked the Secretary of State for Air what steps he proposes to take to deal with the demonstration of nuclear disarmers arranged to be held at the United States Air Force Base at Greenham Common, near Newbury, on 23rd June.
The Secretary of State for Air (Mr. Julian Amery) It would not be prudent to reveal our plans in advance.
Mr. Marten Does my right hon. Friend realise that the cost to the public of these nuclear disarmament demonstrations since December, 1961, has been well over £30,000? Will he therefore please undertake to give maximum publicity to the cost to the public which will be incurred as a result of this demonstration?
Mr. Amery I undertake not only to do that, but to point out to the public the extremely unsatisfactory situation which the C.N.D. bodies impose on us by obliging airmen to undertake police duties.
