RAF Lakenheath
Mr. Llew Smith: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence on what
occasions since 1966 Her Majesty's Government have made statements
relating to the accident at Lakenheath Air Force base on 26 July
1956; and if he will make a statement. [40489]
Mr. Soames: I assume that the hon. Member is interested in the
accident which occurred at RAF Lakenheath on 27 July 1956. On 9
November 1979, the Secretary of State for Defence made a statement
about the accident, Official Report, column 321-22. This confirmed
that no nuclear materials were involved either within the crashed
aircraft or in any of the buildings affected; the US authorities
have recently re-confirmed this to have been the case.
