USA begynder at bombe civile byområder i Japan, herunder Tokio.
/ By The Numbers: The U.S. fire-bombing of Tokyo, March 9-10, 1945:
Airplanes: 334 B-29 "Superfortress" bombers.
Munitions: A half-million M-69 incendiary cylinders that released 100-foot streams of fire upon detonation. Sixteen square miles of the city burned; asphalt boiled in the 1,800-degree heat.
Dead: An estimated 100,000, nearly all of them civilians. The fire-bombing killed more people immediately than the atomic attacks on Hiroshima or Nagasaki that preceded the end of World War II.
Robert MacNamara on the 1945 firebombing of Tokyo, which he helped plan as a wartime assistant to Gen. Curtis LeMay:
'LeMay said if we'd lost the war, we'd all have been tried as war criminals. And I think he is right. He, and I'd say I, were behaving as war criminals. LeMay recognized that what he was doing would be thought immoral if his side had lost. But what makes it immoral if you lose and not immoral if you win?'"
