The first recorded "sit-down" strike in the U.S. was staged by
workers at the Hormel Packing Company in Austin, Minnesota. The
tactic worked: Hormel agreed to submit wage demands to binding
arbitration.
The success of this strike reinvigorated the labor movement, which
had been in decline through the 1920s.
