"Negro History Week" was observed for the first time, conceived by
Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an an opportunity to study the history and
accomplishments of African-Americans.
Dr. Woodson was the founder, in Chicago in 1915, of the Association
for the Study of Negro Life and History and first published the
Journal of Negro History — a publication still in
existence.
