Berrigan, Philip

Amerikansk katolsk jesuiterpræst, pacifist og civil ulydighedsforkæmper. Soldat under anden verdenskrig. Præst 1955. Datter: Frida Berrigan.
Foruroliget over amerikansk koldkrigspolitik i begyndelsen af 60'erne, begyndte Berrigan at tale imod militarisme og våbenkapløb. Han var ofte i strid med kirkens hierarki over hans fredsaktiviteter, som i sidste ende blev fokus for hans livsværk Philip Berrigan blev modstander af Vietnam-krigen. Første direkte aktion mod amerikansk værnepligt i 1967.
Han deltager også i Catonville 9 aktionen i 1968, samt i the Baltimore Four, The Harrisburg Seven, The DC Nine, The Chicago 15, The Boston Eight, The East Coast Conspiracy to Save Lives, The Camden 28 Group, The Buffalo Five - som var en del af the Camden Action against Buffalo Draft Boards.
Fængslet i seks år på grund af sine aktioner mod de amerikanske sessions-myndigheder. Philip Berrigan er medstifter af ikkevolds-kollektivet Jonah House i begyndelsen af 1970erne. Afruster som den første dele af et MX-missil i september 1980 i en aktion kaldet Ploughshare Eight.

'Biography
Jerome C. Berrigan was born in 1919. He is the son of Thomas Berrigan and Frida Fomherz, also spelled, Fromhart, and the fourth of their six children. In 1955, Jerome married Carol Rizzo. Jerome and Carol have five children: Philip, Marie, Maria, Jerome Jr., and Carla. Jerome Berrigan was a professor of English at Onondaga Community College (OCC) in Syracuse for over 30 years. He has been involved in political protests since the late 1950s and volunteers in various jails, nursing homes and colleges near his home in upstate New York. Jerome’s home became a repository for the family's history and materials collected by Philip and Daniel.'
